Rodeo Weekend at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is held the 26th & 27th of September. The Rodeo Historical Society will induct ten worthy candidates to the Rodeo Hall of Fame and will also honor Sherry Cervi with the Tad Lucas Memorial Award, and Joe Beaver with the Ben Johnson Memorial Award and All-Around Honoree, Dee Pickett. Inductees to the Rodeo Hall of Fame are Randy Bernard, Doug Brown, Bill Martinelli, Dennis Reiners, Bob Robinson plus deceased inductees: Ted Ashworth, Bob Cullison, Marvin Holmes and Frances Smith.
Friday evening, from 5:30 to 7:30 Cocktails and conversation will be enjoyed by old friends and new, visiting with inductees and remembering old times in and around the rodeo arena. The Benefit Auction will also be on view, which is the sole fundraiser for RHS during the year.
Saturday is a fun-filled day with 10:00 AM book signings by John McBeth, a World Champion Saddle Bronc rider, on his new book, "Eight Seconds of Grace, The Stories of John McBeth" and myself with my new book, "Western Women Who Dared To Be Different".
Also at 10:00 AM will be a talk by Randy Bernard on "Bringing the Sport of Rodeo to Television"
At 11:45 to 2:30 an RHS Membership Meeting followed by a light lunch. Then the hilarious stories called "Rerides Rendezvous" begins. Anyone can get up and tell an actual event that happened to them during their rodeo career. These accounts are usually untold incidents that will keep everyone laughing. Two tickets to the National Finals Rodeo and two nights accomodations at the Gold Coast Hotel for Dec. 4 and 5, will be presented to the 'tale-teller' that has the best story, determined by the audience.
At 5:30 the Champions Gala will be held when all inductions and honors will be presented following cocktails and dinner.
Behind the scenes during this festive weekend, each inductee and honoree will be added to the RHS Oral History Project. This means an hour long video interview will be completed with each person, or the family of the deceased inductee. Their stories of their personal rodeo careers, including their achievements, disappointments and challenges, are covered. These interviews are housed in the Dickinson Research Center, in the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and are available for researchers, authors and educators interested in the history of rodeo.
